The overall aim of this workshop is to train the ESRs in the foundations and technologies of femtosecond modelocked laser systems with an emphasis on erbium fiber technology. It will start with a brief introduction of diverse passively modelocking architectures (nonlinear loop mirror, polarization rotation, "figurenine", etc.) followed by hands on experimental training on advanced topics related to fs laser frequency combs such as supercontinuum generation, f-2f interferometry, self-referencing and active stabilization of fs modelocked lasers. The course will be led by technical staff at Menlo. Learning outcomes: At the end of the workshop,  ESRs will be able to assemble their own passively modelocked fiber laser; operate a commercial fs fiber frequency comb; assess the technical requirements for the absolute stabilization of a fs modelocked laser.

Menlo is one of the leading medium size companies creating optical technology for precision measurements and their applications from the table tops of research laboratories to standard use in communication and high technology industries. Frequency comb technologies is central part of the Menlo’s business.

On Thursday external coach will deliver the Apples & Oranges Workshop:

This workshop is based on a business simulation - it will help you to see a bigger picture of business. We will discuss management issues and decisions and simulate their impact on performance, cash and value creation.

Participants will

  • Learn the basic business finance language and the logic of business – “how it works.”

  • Understand how their business generates profit today and how it will need to grow profitably in the future.

  • Get the meaning of working capital and how the use of assets affects profitability. They will gain a better idea of the issues that arise when scaling a company for growth.

  • See how small changes in operations - such as enhancing the information flow, improving purchase efficiency and engaging people - can significantly change the outcome and improve bottom line results

  • Reflect on their knowledge about money and may ask a lot of questions

On Friday a patent attorney will introduce you to the topic of copyrights, licences and patent rights.

The workshop will conclude with a Menlo tour to all different production lines.
